David specialises in planning, planning agreements and many aspects of public law. In addition, he has highway experience, including compulsory purchase orders (CPOs), and has been involved in a number of recent Private Finance Initiative/Public Private Partnership (PFI/PPP) schemes.

He advises on a wide range of planning and public law issues. Recently, David has advised in a number of major leisure schemes, including listed building issues and compliance with the Environmental Assessment Regulations. He acts for Sainsbury's companies, and has spent time on secondment to their town planning department. Notably recent projects include the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station, and the new proposals for the Millennium Dome.

In addition, David advises on the commercial implications of the Human Rights Act. He often writes articles and gives talks at conferences on the subject. He also advises both the public and private sector on issues associated with the ability of public sector bodies to enter into contracts, and the relevant procedural requirements.

"The aspect of my work which I most enjoy is its variety. A 'typical' day (if such a thing exists) involves anything from negotiating complex infrastructure agreements to attending Magistrates' Courts.

"Another of the more interesting aspects of being a planning lawyer is dealing with the combination of law, policy and commercial issues. I am part of a team which makes things happen. The feeling of achievement this generates is a good incentive."
