John specialises in all aspects of intellectual property law with an emphasis on contentious work. His practice covers all IP disciplines including patent, trade marks and passing off, copyright, industrial designs, confidential information, IT, publishing and advertising. John also has a prominent defamation practice and a particular expertise in domain name and "cybersquatting" disputes.

John's reported cases include acting successfully for Citigroup in a leading English decision on cybersquatting GPM v. Citigroup Inc.[2006] FSR 39 and acting for the successful claimant in a leading case on crown sovereignty in patent disputes A Limited v B Bank and CA [1997] FSR 165 .  He has also acted in publishing litigation against the Duchess of York and advised the Official Solicitor to the Supreme Court on copyright matters.

John has been highly rated as an intellectual property lawyer for many years in Legal 500 and Chambers.  The current 2008 edition of Legal 500 describes John as "one of the best trade mark lawyers we work with".  The current 2008 edition of Chambers describes John as "immensely practical" and states that he is "admired for his clear communication skills and likeable manner".
